Skills and Qualifications:
Completion of at least 60 college hours with an emphasis in science and two
years previous PA experience required
Graduate of an American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) /
NAACLS educational program, and certified by the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists Board of Registry as a Pathologist Assistant (PA(ASCP)) preferred
Extensive knowledge of the basic sciences, especially anatomy
Extensive knowledge of surgical pathology and autopsy techniques
Ability to summarize complex clinical data
Extensive comprehension of medical terminology
Good working knowledge of histologic procedures
Demonstrated dissection technical skills
Ability to perform frozen sections
Demonstrated verbal and written command of the English language; Ability to
communicate clearly and effectively
Demonstrated ability to function both independently and as part of a team
Working knowledge of computer applications
Strong interpersonal skills and judgment to permit interactions with
Pathologists, Technicians, and other staff
Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a limited time frame.
Essential Job Duties:
Perform a wide variety of tasks in processing of the full range of human surgical
pathology specimens, including gross description and dissection and submitting
appropriate diagnostic sections; Perform gross photography of surgical
specimens as needed
Field phone calls from Pathologists and respond to requests
Maintain and organize Gross Bays daily after use
Maintain competency through web-based Standard Operating Procedure
updates as well as educational modules
Adhere to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all
applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies
Utilize automated equipment properly according to lab procedures and
manufacturers’ instructions
Handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants
appropriately and safely
Learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using
electronic keyboard and other peripheral devices
Ensure work area has proper coverage at all times during the work shift, ie
coverage or meal and/or rest periods
Immediately notifies supervisory personnel of malfunctioning instrumentation
Protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
Perform other duties as assigned or requested
